Extra East Side
The Travers family pre dated the Lake family move to the Eastern side with Joseph Travers, my 4th cousin 3 x removed, who was b 1803 in Loders Dorset. Along with his wife, Eliza Bray, and 10 children they arrived in New York on 5th June 1850 on board the Silas Greenman from Liverpool. The journey of 252 miles from Loders to Liverpool through rural England in 1850 must have been quite a journey let alone then getting on a boat and travelling 3,312 miles to New York. Just think there was no TV showing what New York was like did they know what they were going to?
Joseph was naturalized on 20 Oct 1856 in New Rochele New York but most of his family had moved to Macoupin County Illinois by 1855.
His son Joseph b 1844 was a private in the Illinois Infantry B Company 49th Regiment during the American Civil War. Most of the family stayed in Illinois the rest of their lives.
The Massachusetts Connection
The Lake Family Tree does indeed have a presence on the East Side as we truly found out when online internet searches became more available.
Mary Lake, my 3rd Great Aunt, married Thomas Warley on 14 Nov 1826 in Plymstock Devon. They had 11 children between 1827 and 1849, 4 boys and 7 girls. In 1851 the family were living at the wonderful named La Rocher Vingtaine of Fief de la Reine St Martin Jersey and in 1861 they were in St Peter Port Guernsey. We then have a gap we are as yet unable to fill until 1880, when Thomas Warley, a widow, is living in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. We do not as yet know when Thomas emigrated or when Mary died, but the amount of cousins that emanate from this family is astonishing. Some of the children remained in the Channel Islands but the ones who went to Massachusetts thrived in the children stakes.
John L Warley married Sarah Stanton and had 4 children, Mary Way Warley married Silas Roberts and had 10 children, Thomas West Warley married Catherine White and had 2 children, George Henry Warley had 3 children & William Moses Warley married Eliza Dart Hooper and had 2 children. So that is 21 - 2nd cousin 2 x removed in Massachusetts alone from this one family. The Massachusetts family names of Warley, Roberts, Potter, Buntel, Gosselin, Staples, Riley, Le Fevre and many more, all have a connection to the Lake Family.
Thomas who was a stone mason, like many of the Lake Family, died in 1884.
His son George Henry Warley started the business G H Warley & Co Granite Dealers in Tyngboro Rd Chelmsford Massachusetts which continued for many years.
I have not been able to add everyone linked to the tree on the East Side but we have a connection in one form or another to all states of the USA both East & West
One thing that amazed me when I started researching Massachusetts was the amount of English place names that were appearing.
I know people emigrated from the UK but to have all these familiar place names was quite strange.
Chelmsford, Taunton, Plymouth, Worcester, Gloucester, Malden, Woburn, Northampton, Haverhill, Marlborough, Cambridge to name a few. It was also odd having English County and Town names as Massachusetts County names so:
Middlesex County, Essex County, Barnstable County, Bristol County, Berkshire County
& Taunton County.
I then found the confusing mix of towns and counties so in Massachusetts you have Chelmsford in Middlesex County, whereas in England, it is Chelmsford in the County of Essex.
I would like to thank 2 cousins in Massachusetts, Paula McCarron & Alec Johnston, who have given invaluable help to me in researching the families in Massachusetts. Their help has been invaluable and I have been able to reciprocate by researching for them on my last visit to the Channel Islands. We have never yet been to Massachusetts, hopefully one day we will get there.
