John William Lake 1868 - 1940
Background to the Lake Family Tree
This site is dedicated to all the children of
John William Lake born 4 July 1868 in Guernsey
it is also dedicated to our son Andrew David Lake who died on 1st Jan 2016 see additonal page
Only one of his children, Isabel May, is still alive (2018). Of the 14 children he had, Elsie, Gladys, Ivy, George & Alfred all died under the age of 1. Margaret died aged 3, Philip died age 7, Clara died age 18. The rest, John William, William, Herbert, & Henry lived long lives and the oldest to date, Nellie, living until her 97th birthday.
Over the years many of the family have delved into finding out about the ancestors. Henry Lake started many years ago when investigating was very difficult. William Lake had a genealogy company do some work in the 1970's. Some years later my brother, John, took up where the company had stopped and started to research the tree again. In 1999 whilst on a visit to Jersey in the Channel Islands, John asked my wife Janet and I to have a look and see if we could find anything in the records there, which we did. I became hooked and have been researching ever since. My wife had been looking into her family for some years previously.
My cousin John Rex Lake has been very interested in the work and has helped tremendously with information, photographs and old letters for which I am very grateful.
Our research has taken us to a variety of places including Channel Islands, Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset, Wales, London and even the USA. I think the old family members would now be amazed at what we have discovered since their deaths and the relatives that we have made contact with in recent years from as far as the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
On the following pages you will find many of the wonderful, sad, tragic and amazing stories that we have uncovered so far.
If you happen to know anything about any of the people mentioned please get in touch with me I would love to hear from you
