A very distant relative in my family tree is Frederick William Knewstubb who was born in 1874 in Cumberland England.

By 1905 he had become the District Engineer Water Rights Branch at the Parliament Buildings in Vancouver British Columbia. In the 1920's Frederick led the exploration parties for power development in various regions of the coast mountains.

He was partly responsible for the Ootsa Lake Reservoir and the south arm of the reservoir is named Knewstubb Lake after Frederick. He also has a peak named after him Mount Knewstubb lies to the south of the Franklin Arm of Chilko Lake in West Central British Columbia.

It was a sunny day in June 1999 when Janet & I first walked into the record office in St Helier, Jersey.

The assistant asked us what we were researching and I said the name "Lake" she looked at me and said "Oh are you related to Wilfred Christopher Lake, the one mentioned in the book about Canada.  I looked aghast as I had no idea what she was talking about, this was my first time ever doing any research and I had never heard of a Wilfred Christopher Lake.

Well, it turned out that Wilfred is my 3rd cousin 1 x removed and the book he is mentioned in is called The Quiet Adventures in Canada by Marion Turk:

"Lake Wifred C left Guernsey to serve with the Royal Field Artillery in the 1914 - 1918 war and later moved to Canada."

Wilfred was born 27 Apr 1889 in L'Islet Guernsey, the only child of David Arthur Lake & Mary Ann Young. Just a few weeks after Wilfred's birth on 17 June 1889 his father David died aged just 23. His mother re married in 1892 and he had 2 step brothers.

On 22 Dec 1906 Wilfred married Mary Frances Phillips in ST Joseph's Church St Peter Port Guernsey. They went on to have 13 children.

In World War 1 Wilfred served as No 89229 Royal Field Artillery 9th Div Corps.

We are not sure exactly when Wilfred went to Canada but in 1925 Mary and children sailed from Liverpool  and the family settled in Hamilton Ontario.

In 1971 Wilfred and his son Clifford George made a journey back to Guernsey which made the local newspapers. Wilfred died in 1979 & his wife Mary in 1967.

The eldest child of Wilfred Christopher Lake & Mary Frances Phillips,(see left) was Lucy Winifred Lake. who married Joseph Vargo in 1928 in Wentworth Ontario.

As with many in this family, Lucy was a member of the Roman Catholic Church and was a very active member in lots of organisations and did a lot of charity work. She knotted bonnets for newborn babies at St Joseph's Hospital, she was a member of the Canadian Catholic Women's League and was a Past President of both the Winnetts Travel Club & The Ladies Auxilery British Imperial Club both of these located in Hamilton Ontario.
